Welcome to Heeling Room Reflexology

Hello. I am Nicola Reed BSc(hons) Midwifery MAR PRD and a warm welcome to my website. I am the founder, face and hands behind Heeling Room Reflexology. Here's a little bit about me and I how I got here!

My passion has always been about health and well-being and from a young age I always wanted to care for people.

I trained and qualified as a midwife in 2001 and spent over 15 years as a practising midwife in the NHS. During this time I was privileged to look after many women and their families. I also studied and used complementary therapies within my practise to help support women in their pregnancies and childbirth journeys. This was how I discovered reflexology and its wonderful benefits.

I am a mum to four boys and in 2021 I took the decision, having left midwifery practise to follow my passion and to gain a deeper knowledge about reflexology and holistic health. I retrained and now hold a Professional Reflexology diploma. I am fully insured and a full member of the Association Of Reflexologists (AOR). I am also listed on the NHS register of practitioners.

My work and focus now is to incorporate my reflexology training with my knowledge and expertise in Women's health. To provide my clients with bespoke reflexology treatments to support their well being goals, encouraging healthier and balanced lives.

What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is an ancient practice originating from Egypt, India and China. It is a complementary therapy which is based on the theory that different points on the feet, lower leg, hands, face or ears correspond to different areas of the body. The micro mapping theory believes that all our bodies systems, functions, nerve and energy pathways are accessed through these maps.

Reflexologists use their thumbs, fingers or knuckles to apply pressure to these reflex points. Which brings about a feeling of deep relaxation.

Benefits of Reflexology

Reflexology promotes your own bodies natural healing, supporting homeostasis and rebalance.

People have reflexology treatments for many different reasons . The general benefits include - deep relaxation, release of tension, better quality of sleep, mood improvement and the promotion of physical and emotional well being.

Reflexology is a wonderful therapy and one of the most popular complementary therapies used in the UK. Reflexology today has developed and continues with ongoing research to evolve, so that it remains a relevant, effective and valuable aid.

As a professional reflexologist I continually update my reflexology skills and knowledge with commitment to regular CPD and training.

Some frequently asked questions...

What is holistic health?

Reflexology and holistic health is an approach to life that views multidimensional aspects to wellness. It considers the mind, body and spirit in regards to health and well being. It believes that well-ness is the result of harmony between all three and promotes the enhancement of the four main pillars of health- sleep, nutrition, exercise, rest and relaxation.

We live in a ever busy, fast pace world. Where life can be very stressful. It is thought that stresses of any kind, be that physical, psychological, social or environmental, can upset this balance causing 'dis ease'. Reflexology is a therapy that promotes homeostasis. Through the manipulation of reflex points any imbalances are facilitated to the bodies own innate healing processes encouraging rebalance. Reflexology also works alongside standard conventional medicine as a supportive therapy and should not be used as an alternative to seeking medical advice.

Reflexologists do not identify, diagnose or treat medical conditions.

What is mindful reflexology?

Many clients love to come for reflexology because it leaves them feeling restored, recharged and in a better position to cope. Some clients are wanting more specific support. Along with reflexology for general health and well being. I also offer mindful, maternity and menopause reflexology.

Mindful reflexology is involved in issues regarding the stress response. Stress is a physiological reaction and our own bodies response to pressure. While the body is designed to cope with short bursts of stress, longer term reaction can be damaging to the body's systems. Mindful reflexology aims to support and alleviate stress and focuses on the systems and connections of the immune , endocrine and central nervous system. Reducing and calming the stress response in a natural and healthy way.

What is maternity reflexology?

Maternity reflexology is an area of reflexology, specifically aimed at women during pre-conception, pregnancy, labour and the post- natal period. Reflexology for fertility focuses on supporting hormone balance and the regulation of the menstrual cycle, improving blood circulation and reducing stress levels.

Reflexology to support pregnancy provides women with space and time to unwind, relax and prepare for the arrival of their baby. Some women seek pregnancy reflexology for support with common conditions that can arise during pregnancy, such as constipation, low back pain, heartburn, anxiety, low mood or to help prepare their body for birth.

In the post- natal period when sleep is lacking and hormones levels fall. Reflexology can aid quality sleep and hormone balance. This can help new mums feel better to cope and provide some valuable support at this new and challenging time.

What is menopause reflexology?

Menopause reflexology focuses on women going through peri menopause and menopause. In the UK, 80% of women experience some symptom during perimenopause and menopause. Cortisol (stress hormone) can increase the likelihood of severe menopause symptoms making relaxation a priority. Oestrogen and progesterone (calming hormones) protect us from cortisol. As these levels drop, women feel the effects of stress more acutely. Therefore rising levels of anxiety is a common symptom. Reflexology can provide great support during this time and ease this transition, encouraging endocrine balance and deep relaxation.

How do appointments work?

Every appointment is personalised for you. With your health focus and aims in mind. First treatments start with a lovely, relaxing foot soak allowing time to complete a health questionnaire. This is to personalise the reflexology for your individual needs. Once this is complete we move onto the reflexology treatment. I use a human touch zero gravity chair which inclines slightly, placing your feet in perfect position, while also supporting your spine. You may also want to have a blanket, pillow, eye mask and some relaxing music to help you relax during the treatment.

I use a nourishing calendula powder for the precise reflexology followed by songbird reflexology waxes to massage the feet after. The session is completed with time for feedback, questions and some after care advice.

It is best to wear loose fitting and comfortable clothes to appointments to access the feet and lower leg.

How many treatments would I need?

As with many complementary therapies, one reflexology treatment can do wonders but as with all things health related. Consistency and regularity generally reaps more benefits with cumulative sessions leading to more sustained improvements. Some clients come for monthly sessions to help with general re balance and self care. Some clients come more often as they are working on supporting a particular issue and some clients visit sporadically when they feel they need to and can. Well being is a constant journey and attention to this is key.

Why not give reflexology a try and see if regular treatments could become an important part of your well being?
